Messe à l'usage des vieillards
Bocalises, petite suite | Suite bleue | Messe à l’usage des vieillards. CD Cristal Accord Una Corda 202222. 1992. (5 Diapason · 9 Répertoire · 4 Monde de la Musique).
The only volume devoted to the acousmatic genre of the renowned contemporary music collection Accord / UnaCorda (which published Lachenmann, Kagel, Pesson, Huber, Ferneyhough, Dusapin...), this album brings together three very dissimilar works by their author. Bocalises (1977) is an early work. A brilliant exercise in music concrète, a virtuoso examination of audio editing vocabulary, and something more, awarded the Luigi Russolo de Varese Prize in Italy two years later. La Suite bleue (1983) is based on a universe of rituals, both sweet and disturbing, a mechanical jungle with metallic waterfalls, breathing that would be no more than a ventilation. Messe à l'usage des vieillards, (1987) is composed on a text by Thomas Brando, which replaces the ordinary Mass with a very personal meditation on life, old age and death. With a discreet, evocative musicality, it takes the listener into a framed territory, of diverted compassion, of false innocence, then finally into a discourse where recurrences only serve to underline emotional confusion. This work, of a feigned phlegma, shows a rare mastery of sonic dramaturgy, and is marked by quite an exceptional vigour.
